The rise and fall of fashion retailers

I don’t have a thing to wear… !

A phrase that is all too familiar, maybe not from yourself but one that I’ve certainly heard in my household. Now I realise that what you’re going to be wearing the next day is not going to be keeping you awake at night but what you decide to wear is a fashion decision whether you realise it or not.

The fashion sector here in the UK plays a significant role in our economy as it generates £26bn for the UK each year, rakes in £10.7bn from consumers and supports almost 800,000 jobs and for two weeks during the year all eyes are on Somerset House in London as the London Fashion Week opens it’s doors. Well established designers such as Matthew Williamson, Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood offer a wealth of inspiration to the chosen few and now thanks to the internet and social media, to a much wider audience.

The speed at which designs are copied and translated from catwalk to High Street has vastly accelerated. And the race to get those catwalk inspired designs on-line is astounding…….

As a consequence, the rise of online shopping has certainly had an impact on the amount of shops that closed down last year. Some 5,839 shops shut down in 2014, while 4,852 opened, with net store closures rising to 987, nearly three times the 371 posted in 2013. Among the biggest victims – with 765 closures – were traditional stores such as clothes and shoe shops.

But our High Street is fighting back, more and more young entrepreneurs are finding the confidence to open independent shops and our basic human need to build communities is what is keeping our high streets alive. Mary Portas, the UK’s retail guru highlights this in her 2014 report

Why Our High Street Still Matters’
